Terviva is developing a new oilseed industry in the United States by processing, propagating, developing elite cultivars of the pongamia tree. Pongamia, (aka karanja) is native to Australia, India, and Southeast Asia. In India, karanja oil has been studied and used as a remarkable biopesticide for decades with results similar to or better than neem. Indian farmers also utilize the meal/cake as a 4-1-1 fertilizer that has wonderful anti-nitrification and nematocidal properties. U.S.-produced karanja holds great promise as a fresh, quality-controlled product for conventional and organic growers to lower their production costs.
